FAQs
Frequently asked questions about Back Care Beds
BEDS
1. What is an electric adjustable bed?
An electric adjustable bed allows you to independently raise and lower different sections of the bed at the touch of a button. The head and foot sections can be adjusted to create a more comfortable sleeping, resting or sitting position. Our adjustable beds are designed to provide greater comfort, flexibility and independence in the home.
2. What is the difference between an individual and a twin adjustable bed?
An individual adjustable bed has one mattress and one adjustable mechanism. A twin adjustable bed has two separate mattresses and two independent mechanisms, allowing each person to adjust their side of the bed to their preferred position. Twin beds are available in sizes including Double, King and Super King.
3. Can I choose the height and size of my adjustable bed?
Yes. Our adjustable beds can be customised to suit your requirements. Standard bed height is approximately 22 inches (56cm) from the floor to the top of the mattress, but beds can be made approximately 2 inches higher or lower where required. Different widths and bespoke length options are also available.
4. How much weight can an adjustable bed support?
Our standard adjustable mechanism is designed for users up to 18 stone (115kg). A heavy-duty mechanism is available for users up to 25 stone (160kg), providing additional reinforcement and thicker slats.
5. Can I use my own mattress on an adjustable bed?
An adjustable bed requires a mattress that is suitable for use with an electric adjustable mechanism. Conventional mattresses are not necessarily designed to flex repeatedly with the bed, so we recommend choosing one of our compatible adjustable-bed mattresses.
6. Can I choose the mattress, fabric and other features?
Yes. Our beds are designed to be customised to your requirements. Depending on the model, you can select your mattress, upholstery colour, mechanism, headboard, storage, castors, covers and other optional features. Colour samples are also available to help you make your choice.
7. Will an adjustable bed fit through narrow doorways or upstairs?
Our adjustable beds are designed to be assembled at their final location, meaning individual components can generally be taken through doorways and up stairs more easily than a fully assembled bed. If you have particularly restricted access, please let us know when ordering so we can advise you.
8. Can I use a bed lever or grab handle with an adjustable bed?
Not all standard bed levers are compatible with adjustable beds. Some commonly supplied wide-base bed levers are unsuitable, but compatible bed levers are available from us and can be added to an order or purchased separately.
9. Can an adjustable bed be made suitable for a hoist?
Yes, in certain circumstances. We can modify the bed to provide the required clearance for an under-bed hoist. This needs to be specified when ordering, as the modification is not available with every bed configuration.
10. Are adjustable beds difficult to operate?
No. The electric mechanism is operated using a simple hand control, allowing you to adjust the head and foot sections independently. If you choose our installation service, our delivery team will assemble the bed and demonstrate how the controls work before they leave.
MATTRESSES
1. Which mattress is best for an adjustable bed?
The right mattress depends on your preferred feel, sleeping position and individual requirements. Our range includes memory foam and spring options, with different firmness levels available. If you're unsure which mattress is right for you, our team can help you choose.
2. Can I choose between a medium and firm mattress?
Yes. Selected mattress options are available in both medium and firm versions, allowing you to choose the level of support and comfort that suits you best.
3. What is the Memory mattress?
Our Memory mattress options use pressure-relieving memory foam designed to mould around the body. Memory foam can provide a comfortable, supportive feel while working with the movement of an electric adjustable bed.
4. What is the Deluxe Memory Foam mattress?
The Deluxe Memory Foam option provides an upgraded memory-foam construction and is available in both medium and firm comfort levels. It is designed specifically to work with an adjustable bed mechanism.
5. What is the Cool Spring Ultimate mattress?
The Cool Spring Ultimate is a spring-based mattress option designed for use with our adjustable beds. It is available in both medium and firm options, providing an alternative to an all-foam mattress.
6. Which mattress firmness should I choose?
Mattress firmness is a personal choice, but body weight can also be an important consideration. We recommend a firmer mattress option for customers weighing 15 stone (95kg) or more, as this can provide additional support and help improve mattress longevity.
7. Can I use a mattress protector with an adjustable bed?
Yes, but it is important to use a protector that is suitable for an adjustable bed. A very rigid or poorly fitting protector can restrict the movement of the mattress when the bed is raised. We also offer a zip-off washable mattress cover designed specifically for our mattresses.
8. Are the mattress covers washable?
A deluxe zip-off washable cover is available. The cover unzips around the top edge of the mattress and can be machine washed. It should not be tumble dried, and we recommend having a spare cover if regular washing is required.
9. What happens if I don't get on with my mattress?
We understand that choosing a mattress can be difficult when you haven't had the opportunity to sleep on it. Back Care Beds offers a 14-night mattress exchange option on qualifying adjustable-bed purchases, allowing you to change your mattress if the original choice isn't right for you. Please check the current exchange terms before ordering.
10. How long is the mattress warranty?
Our adjustable-bed mattresses are covered by a 5-year warranty against manufacturing defects. Where a mattress is confirmed to be defective under the warranty terms, it will be replaced rather than refunded. The replacement mattress remains covered only for the remainder of the original five-year warranty period.
